Spring is a typical time of year to revitalize your home with a deep and extensive spring cleaning. However, even the most diligent homeowners might miss a spot here or there. Here are a few of the most commonly overlooked areas when spring cleaning a home.
Commonly Missed Spots When Spring Cleaning
1. Beneath Appliances
Unlike the front of your appliances that you see every day, it is easy to forget to clean under them. For larger appliances that are hard to move, use a narrow vacuum attachment to collect dirt and dust from hard-to-reach places.
2. Dishwasher
Although it may seem otherwise, your dishwasher does not clean itself. Run a cycle with a cup of vinegar to eliminate residue and mineral deposits that build up over time. Clean your dishwasher’s filter and make sure the spray arm nozzles aren’t clogged with food particles.
3. Exhaust Fan
When your range hood fan is working perfectly, it’s easy to forget it is there. The fan gathers dust and grease, gradually making it less efficient. Remove the cover and clean it well. Using a cleaner, wipe grease, dust, and dirt from the fan blades.
4. Dust the Ceiling Fans When Spring Cleaning
The ceiling fans are often forgotten because they’re overhead. Dust the ceiling fan blades and remove dust from the housing. Use a duster with an extension handle to reach the fan. If it has been a while since you cleaned the fan blades, grab a step stool and a pillowcase. Then, slip a pillowcase over the blade before sliding it off to collect the accumulated dust and keep it from falling on the floor or circulating in your home.
5. Mattress
Spring cleaning is an excellent opportunity to deep clean your mattress. Remove the bedding and sprinkle baking soda on the mattress. Let it sit for 20 minutes to an hour, then vacuum away dust, dirt, and odors.
6. Spring Cleaning the Curtains
Curtains collect dust throughout the year. Although some curtains are machine-washable, others may need to be dry-cleaned. Remove the curtains and lay them on the floor or across the bed to vacuum pet hair and dust. Wash them following the care tags on the fabric.
7. Showerhead
Showerheads sometimes become clogged with dust or sediment, but you can clean them easily with a scrub brush and warm water. Use a 50/50 mixture of warm water and white vinegar. Put this solution in a plastic bag and secure it around the showerhead for an hour. Scrub the fixture, then turn the shower on to rinse.
8. Replace Air Filters as Part of Your Spring Cleaning Tasks
Good air quality in your home is essential to keep you and your loved ones healthy. If you have a humidifier or dehumidifier, clean the air filters or replace them with new filters. This keeps the air fresh and clean. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on air purifiers and vacuum cleaners. Replace the filters as recommended.
9. Washing Machine
The washing machine is often overlooked during spring cleaning. Over time, the washer collects dirt and grime that compromises efficiency and encourages mold growth. If your washing machine has a filter, drain the machine and clean the filter.
10. Door Frames
One of the most commonly missed spots while house cleaning is the top of the door frames. Because they are overhead and challenging to reach, dust, dirt, and pet dander will collect there. Use a step stool to access the door frame. Spray cleaner and a microfiber cloth will help remove built-up dust.
